The Open Language Learning Initiative (OLLI)
calls together students from the global community of language learners to explore
second language skills through a website that is designed to create an immersive learning experience to complement formal instruction.
|
With initial funding from the Hewlett Foundation as part of its Open Educational
Resources Initiative, Coastline Community College is developing the first
English language learning experience for middle school students in China: The
Forgotten World.

|
A combination of story, games, and exercises has been developed to support aspects of language learning: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

|
In collaboration with the Hewlett Foundation, the Chinese Ministry of Education and the U.S. Department of Education, the Coastline team will coordinate a comprehensive assessment of
the game beginning in September 2009. The instructional and creative design
teams at Coastline worked with leading experts in language acquisition,
linguistics, learning pedagogy, technology, interactive media and learning game
design across America and throughout China.
